Where can I get comprehensive blood work on Vancouver Island?

Juvenescence Wellness in Lake Cowichan offers Nurse Practitioner–ordered comprehensive bloodwork — including markers that BC family physicians often won't order through MSP: full thyroid (free T3, free T4, reverse T3, antibodies), comprehensive hormone panels, iron studies with ferritin targets, fasting insulin, hsCRP, vitamin D, B12, and functional metabolic markers.

Stephanie Eschak, NP, can order, interpret, and treat under her own license. No physician referral required. Standard panels are covered under BC MSP when ordered by an NP; specialty markers and the clinical consultation are not, but receipts are issued for extended health submission.

Panels are individualized based on the clinical question, but commonly include:

  • Hormones — estradiol, progesterone, total and free testosterone, DHEA-S, SHBG, prolactin. Timed where clinically appropriate.
  • Thyroid (comprehensive) — TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies. Not just the TSH-only screen.
  • Iron studies — ferritin (with functional targets, not just "in range"), iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation.
  • Metabolic — fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c, full lipid panel, ApoB where indicated.
  • Inflammation — hsCRP, homocysteine.
  • Vitamins and minerals — vitamin D (25-OH), B12, folate, magnesium (RBC where available), zinc.
  • Cortisol — AM serum or 4-point salivary, depending on what the symptom pattern requires.
  • Specialty additions — sex hormone metabolites, advanced lipid markers, food sensitivity panels where clinically indicated.
What you get back isn't just a printout. Results review is a dedicated appointment. Interpretation, treatment planning, and integration with hormone optimization, IV therapy, or weight management happen in that conversation — not as a separate cost.

Can a Nurse Practitioner order bloodwork in BC?
Yes. Nurse Practitioners in British Columbia have full authority to order, interpret, and act on laboratory results under the scope of practice governed by BCCNM. NP-ordered labs are processed through standard BC providers (LifeLabs) the same way physician-ordered labs are. Standard panels are covered under BC MSP when ordered by an NP.
What's included in comprehensive blood work?

Will my GP order these panels?
Some BC family physicians will order comprehensive panels; many won't, particularly markers like reverse T3, free hormones, or hsCRP that aren't routinely covered. NP-led care fills that gap. The labs that are covered by BC MSP are billed through MSP; specialty markers may have an out-of-pocket cost.
Is the lab fee covered by BC MSP?
Standard lab markers ordered by a Nurse Practitioner are generally covered by BC MSP. Specialty markers, certain functional panels, and the clinic consultation fee for ordering and interpreting are not covered by MSP but may be partially reimbursed by extended health benefits.
How long does it take to get results?
Standard panels typically return within 3 to 7 business days through LifeLabs. Some specialty markers (functional thyroid, advanced hormone panels) can take 2 to 3 weeks. A results review appointment is scheduled once full results are in — interpretation and treatment planning happen together, not as a separate cost.
